No pain, SMS reminders improve immunization coverage
By utilizing SMS to remind patients of the three injections required during a six-month period, both a week before the scheduled injection and the day of, CRF Inc. was able to ensure patients fulfill their vaccination schedule and receive proper immunization against specific diseases.
The challenge
CRF Inc. and More Mobile Relations offer vaccination reminder services for pharmaceutical companies. Sanofi Pasteur, one of MORE’s clients, is offering a mobile reminder for its Gardasil vaccination against four types of human papillomavirus (HPV): two types that cause 70% of cervical cancer cases; and two more that cause 90% of genital warts cases. Gardasil is a vaccine for girls and young women ages 9 to 26.
Gardasil is given in three separate injections over a six-month period (0, two and six months). As the vaccinations last during a six-month period, a patient needs several appointments to complete the vaccinations and immunization coverage. If a patient doesn’t complete a vaccinations according to the specified protocol the immunization coverage is likely to fail.
The solution
Patients will find the reminder service on the vaccination card given to them after the first treatment at their doctor. A patient can then register for the reminder solution by sending a SMS message from their mobile phone with the wording GARDASIL to a toll-free SMS short number.
On the day of registration, considered the first vaccination day, the patient will receive an SMS confirming that they have entered the program. The patient will then receive a reminder seven days before the second vaccination date; another reminder will be sent on the day of the second vaccination. The same routine is used for the third vaccination. The day after the third vaccination the patient will receive a SMS text message that they have completed the Gardasil program.
The result
The solution offers a range of positive results and benefits such as better customer service for the patients and a way to optimize retention rates for the required vaccination doses, hence better immunization coverage results for the patients.
Sanofi Pasteur are very satisfied with the solution:
“I´m very happy for the service. It is working well, and physicians and nurses offer the service for their patients who want to get vaccinated with Gardasil. The service is included into the vaccination card that will be given to these patients”.
